Here, you'll find the latest notes concerning the current and next releases of AmphetaDesk. We may wax poetic every so often and just talk about the world of syndication, or other neat things that have happened in this neck of the woods.

Released on October 31st 2002, this version arrives due to the results of a gentleman's poll on the amphetadesk-discuss mailing list concerning larger or quicker releases (quicker releases are preferred). AmphetaDesk v0.93.1 includes a junkload of bugfixes, shuts down some possible security issues, and includes some minor feature tweaks and twiddles. Due to some of the security improvements, I consider this a required upgrade. Get it now or check out What's New.

It came out a while ago, but Ben Hammersley reviewed AmphetaDesk and a few other free aggregators in his Guardian article, Working the web: Newsreaders. In more timely news, OSDir, a repository of "stable, open source apps", has reviewed AmphetaDesk and labels it an 'OSDir.com preferred' app. They also give you the ability to rate AmphetaDesk on a scale of 1-10. You can see the current rating here.

Two New AmphetaDesk Hacks

Since the AmphetaDesk source code is so easily modifiable on any platform, I've been seeing some interesting hacks and modifications lately. The most powerful of them is l.m. orchard's newest template, which provides an insane amount of new features, including hiding old items, click counting, and an outline based format. More than likely, a revised version of his hack will appear as a selectable template in the next version (AmphetaDesk v0.94).

Also of interest is Brian Cantoni's FTPStore: "FTPstore is a slight addition to the AmphetaDesk news aggregator. The modified code will retrieve the personal channel list from an FTP location during startup and store it back to the same location during shutdown. This provides a simple method to keep your saved channels in a network location. If you use AmphetaDesk at home and at work, for example, this feature will let you keep your list of channels in sync." It's a major improvement for AmphetaDesk users with multiple machines.

By joining the amphetadesk-discuss mailing list, you'll be able to keep up to date on the newest happenings in the AmphetaDesk community, whether it be fixes for tricky bugs, tweaks that have been applied to other installations, mentions of AmphetaDesk in the press, or quick answers to common tech support questions.
